Rise of the Runelords

Goblin attack aftermath

Session 2

23rd of Rova, 4707 A.D.

In the aftermath of the goblin attack, the group decided to investigate how the goblins had managed to get into town, with the exception of Darrius, who went to the Rusty Dragon to rest. It didn’t take long to track goblin footprints to a pair of covered wagons that appeared to have been abandoned. Searching the wagons revealed only that goblins had indeed been in them, but nothing else of interest. The group surmised that with all the festival activity, it would’ve been easy to smuggle the goblins in, as long as the drivers themselves were humans.

From there Balan went to look for Sheriff Hemlock to inform him of the wagons, and the rest of the group headed for the north gate to see if they could find out more about the wagons. Meanwhile, Darrius spoke to the halfling maid Bethana Corwin working at Rusty Dragon to see if this goblin attack was unusual.

Bethana said that she doesn’t think something like this has ever happened before. Certainly the goblins are a nuisance, but they only bother people in the Hinterlands around Sandpoint, and don’t enter the town itself.

As the main group was heading towards the north gate, Masaun noticed that something had recently broken a hole big enough for a small creature on the side of a house, leading to what looked like a crawlspace. As Thadius went to investigate, he was greeted with a dagger in the face as the group discovered a goblin gone into hiding after the assault went awry.

Panicked, the goblin tried to run out the other way through the access to the house. A goblin bursting out of the crawlspace access sent the family living there fleeing, and the goblin after them was ambushed by the group at the front door. After a short scuffle, the goblin was captured alive.

Goblin questioning

The group decided to take the goblin to the Sheriff for questioning, and thus met up with Balan again as well. Sheriff Hemlock noted that they had locked up two other goblins already who had survived the assault, and the group was welcome to question any and all of the three goblins.

The goblin Gresgurt, who had been hiding in the crawlspace, was very forthcoming with information, even if he didn’t actually know very much. Their chief, Ripnugget, had ordered them to join some “longshanks” (goblin slang for humans and elves) for an assault on the town, and they were inside the wagons for a short while.

Around this time Darrius rejoined the group, and reiterated what he had found out from Bethana. The group decided that they’d try to look for the horses that had pulled the wagons to town by visiting the Goblin Squash Stables. Unfortunately the stabled horses hadn’t changed, so the group concluded that whoever drove the wagons in must’ve taken the horses out of town right after.

At this point having run out of immediate leads and being exhausted from the fighting, the group decided to take Ameiko up on her offer for lodging at the Rusty Dragon, and settled in for the rest of the day.

24th of Rova, 4707 A.D.

During breakfast, the group was greeted by the exceedingly grateful Aldern Foxglove, who offered his rescuers 50 gold each as a way of thanking them. Eager to learn more about these adventurers, Aldern invited the group for a boar hunt in the nearby Tickwood. Everyone agreed to join the hunt, some more enthusiastically than others.

Before the hunt, the group did some shopping around town for supplies and weapons. It was clear that at this point pretty much the whole town knew of the new local heroes who had stopped the goblin attack, and in addition to gratitude, the new heroes were all given a 20% discount off of anything in stock at Savah’s Armory.

At noon, the group met up with Aldern Foxglove and his retinue, who provided horses for the 30 minute travel to Tickwood. During the travel, Aldern was very interested in the adventurers and their prowess, asking questions and conversing.

In return, Aldern was also forthcoming when the group asked him questions. Aldern is the current head of the Foxglove merchant family, and their business is centered in the city of Magnimar. One of their vacation homes, the Foxglove Manor, is near Sandpoint, and that’s where Aldern was heading when he stopped in town for the Swallowtail Festival. The Foxglove family has their fingers in many pies, and recently have made investments in fine cloths and clothing. Hearing this, Masaun immediately asked to buy a coat like Aldern’s, and Aldern said he’d have one made for a special price of 50 gold.

The boar hunt went well, and the party were able to take down a large wild boar, which is destined for the evening’s dinner at the Rusty Dragon.
